SOME BRACING SEA AIR

As is common with serial killers the frequency and period over which their murders occur will often vary. While for some the killing spree is relatively short, for others, the murderous campaigns will at times span years. History tells us that some murderers, who may kill in rapid succession over a period of months and years, will stop for no apparent reason, with lulls in activity lasting, in some cases, decades.

As for the Ripper, many were baffled as to why the killings should suddenly cease, causing the press and the public to speculate as to where he might be. The Sun journalists, however, thought they had found the answer.

From a previous interview conducted with Clara Hayne, Kennedy Jones had learnt that whenever her nephew’s behaviour became too much to handle, his mother would look to send him away. When Cutbush stepped over the mark, which was often, Kate would remove him from London, sending him to the Isle of Thanet, where he would stay intermittently in several of the coastal towns.

His latest crime had been to attack a servant girl, who had tried to enter his attic room without permission. After the attack Cutbush had rampaged through the family home, smashing furniture, including an expensive chandelier, while hurling vile obscenities at anyone in his path. He finally disappeared into the rear garden.

Concerned for their own safety, Kate and her sister believed that once again a break was required. With its beaches and open skies, Kate hoped Ramsgate might offer her son the space he needed, serving as a remedy to his increasing anxiety and within a matter of days had arranged for his carriage to Thanet. It followed a regular pattern established in late 1888, and which carried on until the autumn of 1890.

The Sun journalists discovered that during this period Cutbush had befriended Mr T. J. Crotty and his wife, who lived in one of the town’s larger properties. Cutbush managed to convince Crotty that rather than being a clerk he was in fact an ‘ex-medical man from London’, who had led ‘a very fast life’. Talking extensively and expertly about medicine and anatomy, Cutbush managed to persuade the family that he was a doctor. Eager for free medical advice, Crotty allowed him to treat four members of his own family for a variety of ailments, though any resulting cures or side effects were never established.

From this encounter, it was clear that despite his strange and aggressive behaviour, Cutbush was able to put together a convincing argument when he wanted to.

Crotty recalled that when in Ramsgate Cutbush would pay for two cabmen to drive him about the town, almost exclusively after dark, and that whether being driven or walking, he would be out every night.

During a conversation on the subject of family, Cutbush had lied and informed Crotty and his wife that he was the son of a clergyman, after which he changed the subject and instead chose to discuss his ill treatment at the hands of Dr Brooks.
